Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

Truck drivers are safer than those in smaller vehicles or on foot because trucks are more robust. According to the National Safety Council’s data, this is the most significant cause of mortality for people in motor vehicles.

Around 4,000 persons in the United States lose their lives in incidents involving trucks yearly. A big rig is responsible for less than 2% of accidents but causes 12% of fatalities.

All state and federal highways in California have a 55 mph speed restriction for trucks. Clearly, decreasing the maximum speed of semis will help achieve the goal of reducing accidents involving these vehicles.

Over 28,000 truck accidents occur annually in the Golden State, according to data gathered by the California Office of Traffic Safety. There were 359 fatalities and 9,500 injuries reported in 2017.
