What Do I Do After the Bike Accident?

It is tough to think clearly after being hit by a vehicle, let alone if you were injured. However, what you say and do at the crash scene can significantly affect the outcome of a subsequent claim you file against the at-fault party. These tips may help you avoid doing something that could reduce the value of your personal injury claim:

  1. Call the police as soon as the accident occurs and ensure an officer creates an accident report.
  2. Take photos of your injuries, the accident scene, property damage, the weather conditions, the road conditions, and the vehicle that hit you.
  3. Take pictures of the at-fault driver’s license, insurance card, and license plate.
  4. Get the names and contact information of all eyewitnesses or anyone who may have seen anything.
  5. See a doctor or other healthcare professional immediately, and tell them about every affected part of your body.
  6. Keep a journal about your injuries and the recovery process, detailing how you feel, the treatment you receive, and what costs you pay.
  7. Do not speak to the insurance adjuster or accept a settlement offer until you talk to an experienced lawyer.
  8. Stay off social media and avoid posting about being in an accident or the circumstances of your accident.
  9. Talk to our bicycle accident lawyers in California. We can determine whether your case has merit, help you talk to insurance companies, and assist you in filing a personal injury claim if necessary.

Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

The use of bicycles for recreation, transportation, and physical fitness is growing in popularity in the US. Bikes on the road have the same legal rights and responsibilities as motor vehicles and are subject to the same laws. Riders are frequently exposed to a few hazards. Drivers frequently ride too closely to cyclists when it is unsafe, disregarding their rights. Accidents and even deaths may result from this.

One of the most common causes of speeding, running red lights and stop signs, and paying insufficient attention to the road is failure to yield the right of way. A tragic bicycle accident can be caused by reckless or drunk driving.

According to the National Safety Council, bicycle accidents have resulted in 2.5% fewer deaths in 2021 but have increased by 37% in the last 10 years (from 900 in 2012 to 1,230 in 2021). Furthermore, the number of preventable nonfatal injuries has decreased by 44% from 532,212 in 2011 to 299,944 in 2021. The number of deaths related to bicycles peaks in the warmer months, beginning in July and continuing until the end of October. Most deaths occurred in September (149) and the fewest in February (60).
