Fatal Rear-End Crash Statistics

A rear-end collision occurs when one vehicle collides with the car in front of it. Because the leading driver cannot always avoid a collision, a rear-end collision is frequently (but not always) the fault of the rear position driver.

According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration, rear-end crashes account for around 29 percent of all traffic accidents in the United States that result in serious injury.

Every year, over 1.7 million rear-end crashes occur in the United States. Approximately 1,700 individuals are killed, and another 500,000 are injured in these approximately 2 million incidents.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 118,029 drivers were wounded in rear-end incidents in 2011, and 405 drivers were died (CHP).

These collisions typically happen at traffic lights, junctions, or when traffic is halted due to accidents or other road conditions.
