[02-15-2023] San Bernardino County, CA – Two Teens Hospitalized After Rollover Crash in Barstow

Three people were injured, two of them hospitalized, after a single-vehicle rollover crash in Barstow on Wednesday afternoon, February 15, 2023.

According to the California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino Fire Department, the crash occurred around 3:02 p.m. on southbound Interstate 15, roughly two miles after the Outlet Center Drive exit.

A white Chevrolet Suburban was reportedly traveling along I-15 on the northbound lane. For reasons still under investigation, the car veered to the center divider before rolling over many times and landing on its side on the divider’s southbound side.

Responding firefighters assisted the car’s three occupants. The driver sustained minor wounds, while the two teenage passengers were airlifted by Mercy Air #66 to Loma Linda University Medical Center with unspecified injuries and no words on their current state.

It is uncertain what caused the collision as the CHP Barstow Office currently looks further into the crash.

Single-Vehicle Accident Statistics

In 2020, more people were dying in car accidents because they weren’t wearing seat belts, were traveling too fast, or were under the influence of alcohol, said the National Safety Council. An increase of 8.3% comes after three years of decline in fatalities. The number of people killed in car accidents increased to 42,338 in 2020 from 39,107 in 2019 in the US.

There were 3,847 fatalities due to automotive accidents in California in 2020. The majority of the fatalities (59%; 2,260) occurred in accidents involving only one vehicle, while 41% (1,587) occurred in collisions involving two or more vehicles.

About 1,378 persons died in automobiles (36%), while 674 died in sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks (18%). 26%, or 986 people, were pedestrians; 14%, or 539 were motorcycle riders; 3%, or 129 were bicyclists; and 1%, or 25 people, were in large trucks.
