[02-22-2023] Stanislaus County, CA – Hit-and-Run Collision in Modesto Causes Minor Injuries

[02-22-2023] Hit-and-Run Collision in Modesto Causes Minor InjuriesA bus passenger complained of pain after getting struck in Modesto on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

The crash occurred on Wednesday in the 2900 block of Laramie Drive.

A man wanted for felony evasion in Salida was located in Modesto after he eluded authorities once more, ran into a county bus, a tree, and several backyards before being apprehended at his parents’ home.

The Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies eventually apprehended the suspect.

According to Lt. David Mullins, he has been identified as 37-year-old Andrew B. of Modesto.

Mullins claimed that deputy Mitch Pinheiro chased Ball because the car he was operating was wanted for a seizure warrant. Ball was being pursued by Pinheiro in his sheriff’s car and later on foot.

According to Mullins, Ball’s tire clipped a curb, ending the four to five-minute chase.

Ball hit a Stanislaus Regional Transit bus just barely as he turned onto Lakewood Avenue while traveling west on Laramie Drive. According to Modesto police officer Ron Ziya, the bus only suffered minor damage. The driver told police she was unharmed, but he claimed the bus’ bike rack was bent.

Mullins claimed that no one was taken to the hospital, but a bus passenger complained of pain.

Mullins said the deputies were searching for Ball’s vehicle due to a recent California law that permits local agencies to enter information about cars lost in pursuit.

Hit-and-Run Crash Statistics

Recently, pedestrian accidents have resulted in an increasing number of pedestrian deaths. Pedestrian deaths are alarmingly high each year.

According to recent studies, California has the highest risk of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries compared to other states. In 2012, there were over 14,000 injuries and 893 deaths among pedestrians in California.

A hit-and-run accident occurs when a vehicle is involved in a collision but fails to stop to render assistance (this includes drivers fleeing the scene on foot). In addition to the suffering and social and economic costs associated with injury accidents, hit-and-run accidents can worsen outcomes due to victims being delayed or not receiving medical attention.

A recent study found an increase in hit-and-run fatalities. In 2020, hit-and-run accidents accounted for 24% of all pedestrian fatalities.

Failure to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly is one of the leading causes of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. Pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible, avoid using drugs or alcohol while walking, and exercise caution when crossing parking lots or driveways. As a result, they will be less likely to be injured in these collisions.
