[03-11-2022] Los Angeles County, CA – Two Officers Injured in Crash Involving Wrong-Way Driver on 10 Freeway

[03-11-2022] Two Officers Injured in Crash Involving Wrong-Way Driver on 10 FreewayA BMW driver was traveling the wrong way collided with a CHP SUV on the 10 Freeway early Friday, March 11.

The incident was reported at around 2:00 a.m. on the 10 Freeway west of downtown Los Angeles.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol put themselves in harm’s way early Thursday to avoid a potentially fatal collision.

Concerned for the safety of other motorists, the officers positioned their patrol SUV in front of a wrong-way driver on the 10 Freeway west of downtown Los Angeles.

The CHP received a report of a wrong-way driver in a BMW driving east on the westbound freeway in Arlington Heights.

Officers used lights and sirens to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop.

Officer Richard Yebra of the California Highway Patrol reported they attempted to stop the driver just by being present.

The wrong-way driver continued eastbound, and the officers had pretty much placed their patrol vehicle in the wrong-way driver’s path to prevent public injuries.

The officers then drove their patrol car into the path of the BMW on the freeway.

Noticing the BW’s driver was not reacting or slowing for the patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and fearing for the safety of innocent civilian motorists behind them.

According to the CHP, the officers made the split-second decision to put their own lives in danger by deliberately maneuvering the patrol vehicle directly into the path of the BMW.

The officers braced for the violent impact, which successfully stopped the wrong-way vehicle’s momentum, sparing innocent lives from injury and death.

When the driver collided with the patrol SUV, two officers in the SUV received minor injuries.

Reckless Driving Accident Statistics

The lives of innocent bystanders are jeopardized when reckless or aggressive drivers operate their vehicles. Because of someone else’s careless driving, innocent people should not have to bear the brunt of it.

Damage and injury caused by drivers who operate their vehicles in this manner should be held against them. Reckless driving has led to an increase in traffic accidents across the country.

An average of 90 people per day are killed in approximately 6 million accidents that occur each year in the United States. An estimated 3.2 million people are killed, and more than 2 million are seriously injured in car accidents each year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines “reckless driving” as “an individual commits a combination of moving traffic violations to endanger other persons or property.”

Reckless drivers are responsible for more than a third of the 13,000 people who die in car accidents each year.

Each of these blunders was caused by someone’s carelessness. Reckless driving practices include speeding, tailgating, racing, and erratic driving. Using a cell phone while driving is a dangerous practice that all motorists should avoid at all costs.
