A Hanford man was seriously injured in a collision with a big rig on Highway 99 in Modesto on Monday morning, March 14.

Officer Ming H. of the California Highway Patrol said Eligio H., 47, of Newman, was driving a big rig north in the slow lane of Highway 99.

He heard a loud bang on the left side of his cab then saw a vehicle spin out of control in front of him.

According to Hsu, Hernandez, who was not hurt, pulled over and walked back to where the vehicle had gone off the road.

He discovered a 2006 BMW that had crashed into a tree, trapping the driver inside.

When the Modesto Fire Department arrived, they had to use hydraulic extrication tools to free the driver.

The driver, Paul S., 39, of Hanford, was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Hanford with serious injuries.

Hsu said he was still in intensive care on Tuesday.

Hsu stated that the CHP is looking for witnesses to figure out what Schwartzkoph was doing before the crash and what caused him to turn right and hit the big rig.
