Bicycle Accident Statistics

Even though laws have been put in place to safeguard bicyclists, many Americans still feel uneasy about riding their bikes. Approximately 800 bicyclists were killed in traffic accidents in the United States in 2018. Unfortunately, California is no stranger to such catastrophes.

Data suggested a decline of less than 20% in reported bicycle accidents between 2016 and 2017 across the country. The incidence of accidents involving bicycles fell by 12% between 2000 and 2001. Yet, the number of fatalities kept climbing.

In California, bicycles accounted for 4.4% of all road fatalities. This is above average in the United States. The National Cycling Safety Foundation reported that 145 people have been killed and 11,116 wounded in accidents involving bicycles in California in 2017.
