[03-20-2022] Shasta County, CA – Three People Killed in Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in Cottonwood

According to the California Highway Patrol, two teenagers and a young woman were killed in a car accident on Interstate 5 in Cottonwood early Sunday morning, March 20, 2022.

According to news reports, a white 2018 Kia 4-door vehicle collided with the back of a commercial truck parked on the freeway’s shoulder.

The Kia’s driver, a 16-year-old Red Bluff teen, died on the spot.

The front passenger, a 15-year-old girl from Red Bluff, and a passenger in the left back seat, a 20-year-old woman from Cottonwood, were also killed in the crash.

Another passenger in the right-back seat, a 21-year-old Red Bluff woman, survived the accident but suffered serious injuries.

She was taken to Redding’s Mercy Medical Center.

The two teenagers in the front seats of the car were buckled up. According to police, the two young women in the Kia’s back seat were not buckled in.

It’s unclear what caused the accident or whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

Rodney H., 47, of Elk Grove, was not hurt while driving the commercial truck.

The truck driver was not present at the time of the collision. He told officers on the scene that he only felt the impact of the collision on the back of the truck.

The identities of those involved have yet to be disclosed. There are no other details available.

The crash remains under investigation.
