Motorcycle Crash Statistics

The Insurance Information Institute has released some startling statistics about the severity of motorcycle accidents in the United States. In 2018, about 5,000 people were killed in motorbike accidents.

So, what makes riding a motorcycle so dangerous? A variety of factors contribute to this startlingly high death rate. The most fundamental issue is a lack of protection. While seat belts, airbags, and the vehicle’s steel structure protect vehicle occupants from the power of an impact, motorbike riders typically absorb the whole energy of an impact directly into their bodies.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to be killed in a crash than automobile passengers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Motorcycle riders are advised to dress appropriately and wear a helmet to avoid catastrophic injury whenever they ride their motorcycle. Helmets are expected to be 37% effective in reducing motorcycle fatalities.

Motorcycle accidents are frequently caused by distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving, and failure to obey traffic laws.
