Authorities said a chase for a stolen vehicle ended in a violent three-vehicle crash in South Los Angeles early Thursday morning, April 14, 2022.
The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Florence Avenue and Main Street.
According to LAPD Detective Aguilar, the chase began shortly before 1:00 a.m. in the Florence neighborhood, near 82nd and San Pedro streets.
The chase lasted about 30 minutes before ending in a violent crash not far from where it started.
The suspect, who was the only one in the vehicle, was apprehended and taken to the hospital. His condition was unknown, but Aguilar stated that he is expected to recover.
The collision injured four others, including the drivers and passengers of two other vehicles.
Officers were seen with their guns drawn and aimed at a totaled Kia that was stopped in the debris-strewn roadway in a video taken shortly after the crash.
A man lay nearby on the sidewalk, near another badly damaged vehicle with a caved-in hood that had ended up partially on the sidewalk.
Later, that man was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
A third damaged vehicle could be seen behind officers taking cover behind their cruisers.
Officers eventually approached the Kia and drew a man from the vehicle, handcuffing him on the ground.
The suspect has yet to be identified, and no further information is available.
Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
In the United States, the roads are among the most congested in the world. People in the United States drive approximately 280 million registered automobiles on a daily basis.
Six million or more car accidents occur each year in the United States. As many as 38,000 people are killed by traffic accidents every year in the United States, making them the leading cause of death in the country.
A multi-vehicle collision is an example of this. A “multi-vehicle collision” occurs when three or more vehicles collide. Accidents involving “chain-reaction” occur when two vehicles collide on the road, setting off a chain reaction.
In multi-vehicle collisions, more than 13,000 people were killed, according to a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 40% of all car accidents involve one of these vehicles.
