Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

Riding a motorcycle has undeniable advantages. Some people enjoy riding motorcycles because they are inexpensive, enjoyable, and require less parking space. Unfortunately, riding a motorcycle carries its own set of dangers.

Did you know that motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely than car passengers to be injured and 35 times more likely to die in a crash?

According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,286 people died while riding motorcycles in the United States in 2016.

Los Angeles has an ideal climate for motorcycle riding as well. We have sunshine all year, and riders do not face seasonal weather challenges because of our temperate climate. Motorcyclists can usually ride all year if there isn’t much rain, snow, or ice.

Unfortunately, this means that many motorcycles are on the road throughout the year. Combined with the notorious Los Angeles traffic, this can be a recipe for disaster. Motorcyclists are more likely to be involved in an accident in heavy traffic.

There were 235 accidents in 2014, 247 accidents in 2015, 296 accidents in 2016, 276 accidents in 2017, and 221 accidents in 2018. Based on these figures, it is estimated that Los Angeles has 255 motorcycle accidents per year.

However, there is a way to avoid fatal injuries in a motorcycle accident. It has been proved that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of serious head injuries. Wearing a helmet could reduce motorcycle fatalities by 37%.
