Burn Injury Statistics

In the United States of America, on an annual basis, 1.1 million burn injuries require medical attention (American Burn Association, 2002). Roughly 4,500 of them end up passing away. In the United States, burn-related infections are responsible for the deaths of up to 10,000 people each year.

Unfortunately, burns are a natural part of life. Burn injuries are responsible for the death of approximately one person every three hours in the United States. This equates to about 1.5 deaths per 100,000 people and accounts for roughly 2.1 percent of all fatal injuries.

A burn injury causes excruciating pain, requires a long time to heal and may leave emotional and physical scars.

Burn victims frequently experience long-term emotional consequences, such as post-traumatic stress disorder or nightmares about the incident they were affected by. Because they are afraid of getting another burn injury, they might be hesitant to resume their normal activities.
