Fatal Wrong-Way Collision Statistics

Accidents involving a motor vehicle can have devastating consequences. Since automobiles have become such an integral part of our daily lives, many motorists fail to realize just how dangerous they can be and how devastating and even fatal car accidents can be.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently released a study that looked at the number of wrong-way crashes on divided highways in the United States and found that the number of fatalities has increased in recent years.

355 people are killed each year by wrong-way drivers in the United States. 1.34 fatalities are calculated for each wrong-way collision death based on the average of 265 deaths.

A wrong-way collision can result in serious spinal cord injuries, paralysis, or head trauma. This means that the victim may need additional special care in addition to expensive medical treatments and surgeries, and other injury-related care.

According to the AAA Foundation’s research, the likelihood of being a wrong-way driver increases with intoxication, age, and the absence of a passenger in the vehicle.
