Big Rig Accident Statistics

The larger size and greater strength of trucks mean that their drivers are safer in the case of an accident than those traveling in smaller, less robust vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, this is the leading cause of death among victims traveling in passenger vehicles.

More than 4,000 individuals are killed in truck-related accidents each year in the United States. While only 2 percent of incidents involve large trucks, those accidents result in 12 percent of fatalities.

Truck drivers in California are limited to no more than 55 miles per hour on any state or federally-maintained road. The purpose of this is to lessen the likelihood of collisions involving tractor-trailers.

Close to 28,000 truck accidents are reported annually to the California Office of Traffic Safety. There were 9,500 injuries and 359 fatalities in 2017.

The truck’s load could make an accident much worse. An ideal example would be a semi-truck carrying a highly combustible or poisonous substance like gasoline.
