Pedestrian Accident Statistics

From 2007 to 2016, traffic fatalities decreased by 14% compared to 2007. Despite these improvements, the GHSA reports that pedestrian fatalities increased by 27% during this period.

In 2016, 5,917 pedestrians died in the United States. The death rate was predicted to rise to 88 people per minute later that year. One hundred thirty-seven thousand pedestrian accidents in 2017 resulted in emergency room visits.

California has the nation’s highest pedestrian fatality and injury rate. Pedestrians in the state were injured more than 14,000 times in 2012, and 893 were killed.

The majority of pedestrians who get hit by cars sustain serious injuries. These individuals will be most victims if a vehicle collides with a group of pedestrians.

In addition to obeying traffic laws, pedestrians should use the sidewalks, look out for cars traveling in all directions, and cross the street only at crosswalks or intersections. These measures may reduce their chances of being injured.
