Fatal Pedestrian Crash Statistics

A study released by the Governors Highway Safety Association states that 7,485 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in 2021, a record high for the past 40 years.

In 2020, speeding accounted for 8.6% of pedestrian fatalities, up from 7.2% in 2019. Pedestrian safety depends heavily on speed. The probability of fatality for a pedestrian grows exponentially with vehicle speed, from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.

When pedestrians are hit by vehicles, their injuries are almost always severe. Pedestrians involved in car-pedestrian collisions are most likely to be seriously injured.

One of the primary causes of pedestrian injuries and fatalities is failure to yield to pedestrians or braking abruptly.

Pedestrians should always use sidewalks, avoid drinking or using drugs, and be cautious when crossing parking lots or driveways. Thus, they will be less prone to experience injuries in these encounters.
