Berkeley Pedestrian Hit by Car – Elderly Woman Seriously Injured

A woman was severely injured Sunday night after being hit by a vehicle in Berkeley, police said. The lady, who was reported as elderly, was hit by a car on Sacramento Street near Oregon Street, said Lt. Peter Hong of the Berkeley Police Department.

The pedestrian-involved car accident, at the crossing of Sacramento and Oregon streets, was reported at 5:56 p.m., said Berkeley police Lt. Dave Lindenau.

The victim was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland with what Lindenau described as serious injuries.

The driver stopped and is cooperating with police, who were still at the scene investigating as of 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

BPD’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team has been called out due to the severity of the woman’s injuries.

Update, Monday, May 6: The Berkeley Police Department released a bit more detail Monday about the details of Sunday’s crash. BPD identified the pedestrian as a 69-year-old woman who was walking east to cross Sacramento when a southbound driver hit her.

Police said the driver, a 58-year-old man from Berkeley, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The woman’s city of residence was not yet available, and it was not however known if she was in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

As of Sunday night, the woman was in critical condition but she was stable, police said. Officer Byron White, a BPD spokesman, said police were on their way to the hospital to get an update as of shortly after noon.
