Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

Because of how universal cars are to our lives, drivers often forget just how dangerous they can become and that severe and even deadly car crashes can occur. Car accidents in the U.S. happen almost every minute. Tens of thousands of drivers and passengers lose their lives each year due to crashes.

According to the United States Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), there were 33,654 fatal vehicle crashes in 2018, which caused 36,560 deaths. These accidents are caused by various reasons, such as distracted driving, drunk driving, and driver over-fatigue. The driver who caused the accident is liable to the other involved parties for paying their damages, such as those just listed.

In California, the fault for a collision depends on which driver negligently caused the accident. Sometimes both drivers can be at fault. Even if this happens, one driver might be able to recover damages from the other driver.
