Fatal Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident Statistics

When a bicycle collides with a motor vehicle, the vehicle always wins. Bicyclists are what the law refers to as “vulnerable road users,” or those who are most likely to be injured in an accident. Even while wearing bicycle helmets, riders can receive serious and life-threatening injuries in car collisions.

Riding a bicycle on the road can be hazardous and, in rare cases, lethal, especially in congested regions. According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration, 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle incidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of traffic fatalities.

Drunk driving, texting while driving, and irresponsible driving can result in a bicycle crash. Unfortunately, motor vehicle drivers frequently walk away uninjured, while bicyclists suffer severe or even deadly injuries.

Many motorists who hit bikes unlawfully abandon the scene. They may recognize they were at blame for driving while intoxicated, texting and driving, or otherwise neglecting to pay attention, and they may panic or try to dodge liability.

Driving away from the scene is a crime itself. Unfortunately, hit-and-run events continue to occur on US highways daily. Unfortunately, hit-and-run accidents happen every minute in the United States.

In 2016, there were roughly 2,049 hit-and-run fatalities in the United States. Every year, over 682,000 hit-and-run accidents occur in the country. Pedestrians are frequently the victims of hit-and-run accidents.
