Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

According to the United States Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 33,654 fatal car accidents resulted in 36,560 deaths in 2018.

Accidents involving multiple cars are uncommon, but the number of persons hurt and the amount of property lost are astounding when they do occur.

A multi-vehicle accident occurs when many cars collide. When six or more cars are involved, this type of traffic incident is referred to as a “pile-up.”

These collisions are common on highways, where hundreds of vehicles pass at high speeds side-by-side. As a result, many drivers approaching an accident find it difficult to come to a safe stop, resulting in a collision with other vehicles ahead.

According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly one-fourth of traffic fatalities occur in multi-vehicle incidents, with more than 13,000 people killed each year (NHTSA).

Disputes over who was to blame for a multi-vehicle crash frequently resulted in heated legal fights. If you become involved in a court dispute, you may forfeit your right to compensation for your injuries.
