Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to a report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,485 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in 2021, a record high for the last 40 years.

As of 2020, speeding accounted for 8.6% of pedestrian fatalities, compared to 7.2% in 2019. Speed plays a critical role in pedestrian safety. Pedestrian deaths increase exponentially with vehicle speed, from 10% at 23 to 90% at 58 mph.

Tragic outcomes often result from pedestrian accidents. Pedestrians are unprotected in collisions between two vehicles and may sustain serious injuries.

Accidents involving pedestrians account for most fatalities and injuries on American roads. Auto accidents have historically been the most deadly for pedestrians.

A pedestrian should always walk on the sidewalk, avoid drinking or using drugs while walking, and cross parking lots and driveways with caution. Therefore, they are less likely to sustain injuries in such collisions.

What To Do Following an Accident

Report the collision to law enforcement and ensure it is documented. During an interview at the accident scene, tell the truth about what you saw and experienced. Don’t assume anything about things you don’t understand; be careful with your words. After an accident, victims may apologize profusely out of anxiety and shock, even when they are not at fault. To avoid paying out on an insurance claim, insurance companies can interpret this act of kindness as proof that you admitted guilt.
