Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bikes are considered vehicles under California law. To avoid accidents, they must also follow the same rules as individuals who drive automobiles. They must stop at red lights and continue riding straight.

Like other modes of transportation, Bicycles must adhere to the same traffic laws as cars and other trucks. They can ride on the road when there isn’t a bike lane. Bicyclists who ride too close to the road are frequently ignored by motorists, who may even attempt to pass them when it is unsafe.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of all road fatalities.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, approximately 250 bicyclists were killed or injured in San Bernardino County alone in 2019.

To avoid being involved in a fatal traffic accident, bicyclists must obey the speed limit, reduce speed for road conditions, and drive defensively. They should also always wear their helmet.
