[06-01-2023] San Diego County, CA – Man Injured After Falling into Trench at National City Construction Site

A construction worker was injured after falling into a trench at the National City construction site in San Diego County on Thursday evening, June 1, 2023.

According to the National City Fire Department officials, the incident occurred after 9:15 p.m. on East 30th Street and A Avenue.

The man was stuck waist-deep in the trench, and several construction workers attempted to free him before firefighters arrived.

The rescue involved using vacuum trucks to remove sand and dirt from the hole and then hoisting the worker using a harness.

The man was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center with minor injuries and is expected to recover.

The construction work, part of a sewer system project for National City, has been temporarily halted while city officials and the construction company investigate the cause of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
