Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) recorded 5,014 motorcycle fatalities in 2019. Since the early 1980s, it had been steadily decreasing, but in 1998 it started to rise again and remained stable until 2008.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely than passengers in a car to be injured and 35 times more likely to die in a crash.

Drivers failing to see the motorcycle accounts for nearly two-thirds of all motorcycle accidents at intersections. In light of motorcycles’ diminutive size, they are more prone to collisions on the road than cars.

Numerous roads in California appear on motorcycleroads.com’s list of the 100 best motorcycle roads in the world. There are more motorcycles registered here than anywhere else in the United States. The state has registered about 800,000 motorcycles.

According to the NHTSA, motorcyclists were injured 15,527 times, and 541 people were killed in 2017.
