Fatal Train Accident Statistics

Accidents involving trains have decreased frequently, but they still happen occasionally. For example, a pedestrian in Washington state was killed, and an Amtrak train derailed this year.

Hundreds of train accidents are reported each year in the United States. In that year, there were over 8,000 train accidents, according to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

The number of car-train collisions at grade crossings in 2020 was 2,131. While attempting to cross the street in the United States in 2021, 237 people were killed and another 653. Nearly two-thirds (66%) of all accidents in those states happened at grade crossings, where highways and railroad tracks cross each other.

The majority of train accidents occurred due to human error, not technical problems with the track or equipment in 2018. Most people believe trains run automatically, so when an accident occurs, it is usually attributed to mechanical or structural failures.

Taking unnecessary risks on public transportation is not tolerated. However, it is not always the case that less stringent regulations and safety precautions accompany less expensive modes of transportation. Drivers for public transportation services must undergo extensive training before they are allowed to transport riders.
