Fatal Train Accident Statistics

Trains are an excellent way to get around, whether you’re going to work or moving goods. Conductors need to know how to keep passengers and people who aren’t riding with them safe when they use different kinds of transportation. They might take shortcuts or do other dangerous things that hurt other people.

About 5,800 train-car accidents happen annually in the US, most of which occur at railroad crossings. These tragic events, which were expected, killed 600 people and hurt 2,300 others.

Estimates show that more than half of fatal train accidents happen at crossings that don’t have enough active safety systems to keep them in good shape or have none. In some situations, there may be no protections at all.

The Federal Railroad Administration says that over 1,000 people in the United States are hurt in railroad accidents annually. These accidents can happen for a number of reasons, such as when a train goes off the tracks, hits another train or vehicle, or hits an open railroad crossing.

In Southern California, commuter trains like Metrolink may be pushed from behind instead of being moved by an engine that pulls the cars out in front of the train. When cars get into accidents while being driven by their machines, they are more likely to go off the road.
