Big Rig Accident Statistics

Commercial vehicles like semi-trucks are crucial to the economy. Trucking companies in the United States move goods worth billions of dollars annually. The increased likelihood of an accident directly results from the large number of semi-trucks on the road.

In terms of overall fatalities, accidents involving semi-trucks rank first. Big rigs are so massive that they make it difficult for other vehicles to maneuver around them.

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) maintained by the US Department of Transportation, large truck fatalities have increased by 30% since 2009. The carelessness of big rig drivers led to the deaths of 4,102 people in traffic accidents in 2017.

Most people killed or injured in California occur in accidents involving large commercial trucks. There were 3,316 fatal car accidents in 2019, resulting in the deaths of 3,606. Nearly half of the more than 300 people killed in vehicle collisions involving heavy trucks (44) were passengers in the trucks themselves.

Passing a commercial truck safely requires maintaining as much distance as possible from the truck’s blind spot. The truck’s passenger side has a larger blind spot than the driver’s side, making it the riskiest choice for passengers. When changing lanes, you can only pass on the driver’s side.
