According to the Berkeley Police Department, the crash occurred shortly before 11:55 a.m. at Bancroft Way and Shattuck Avenue in downtown Berkeley.

After being described as alert and conscious immediately following the crash, the man sadly passed away from his injuries, according to information provided in response to an inquiry from the Berkeley Scanner.

At 9:45 p.m., the coroner’s office in Alameda County released the victim’s identity as William E., 72. A death certificate for Berkeley resident Evans was issued at 3:07 p.m. from Highland Hospital.

The BPD reported that a man in a wheelchair had been hit by a Peterbilt dump truck, pinning him underneath the truck.

When the collision occurred, the truck was headed west on Bancroft Way, about to cross Shattuck Avenue.

Community member Paul Kealoha Blake told The Berkeley Scanner on Thursday that the man who was hit was almost to the curb cut when he was struck.

When Blake arrived, the man was reportedly still pinned under the truck. There were also a large number of law enforcement and emergency personnel present.

Blake remarked, “They were trying to get him out.” They probably knew it was going to be a major problem.

After the accident, the man was transported to the hospital. The initial assessment of his injuries by authorities was that they were not immediately fatal.

The crash is still under investigation.

Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

After a car accident, saving the lives of pedestrians is nearly impossible. In the event of a collision between two automobiles, pedestrians have no protection and are at a high risk for serious injury.

Recently, there has been a rumored increase in pedestrian injuries and fatalities on American roads. The risk of injury or death from a car accident has traditionally been highest for pedestrians.

While traffic fatalities as a whole decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, the Governors Highway Safety Association reports that there was a 27% increase among young adults in that time.

The number of pedestrian deaths in the United States in 2016 was 5,907. Recent data shows that 88 people lose their lives in accidents every minute.

In 2017, 137,000 pedestrians were injured to the point where they needed to go to the emergency room.

Pedestrian fatalities and injuries in California have reached an all-time high, according to recent studies.

In 2018, accidents involving pedestrians caused over 14,000 injuries and 893 fatalities across the state of California.

The majority of vehicle-related pedestrian deaths are the result of driver negligence or distraction. Hiring a lawyer will improve your chances in court.

Attempts to save pedestrians involved in an accident with a motor vehicle are extremely unlikely to succeed.

Most pedestrians who are hurt or killed in auto-pedestrian accidents are victims of careless or distracted drivers. If you want to improve your chances of winning in court, you should hire an attorney.
