Fatal Single Vehicle Accident Statistics

According to the National Safety Council, In 2020, roads became less safe for several reasons, such as more people dying in crashes where they weren’t wearing seat belts, going too fast, or being drunk. After three years in which deaths went down, they went up by 8.3%. In 2020, 42,338 people died in car accidents, compared to 39,107 in 2019.

Even with this rise, the deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles fell by 95% between 1913 and 2020, from 33 to 1.53. Only 1.3 million cars were registered in 1913, and 4,200 people died on the roads that year. 2020 saw 276 million registered vehicles and 42,338 road deaths.

There were 11% fewer miles traveled in 2020 than in 2019, 0.2% fewer registered vehicles, and 0.4% more people. Because of this, the death rate per mile traveled went up by 21.7%, the death rate per vehicle went up by 8.5%, and the death rate per person went up by 7.9%.

In 2020, 4.8 million people were hurt in car accidents and had to see a doctor. The cost of car accident injuries was estimated at $473.2 billion, including lost wages and medical bills.

Many things can cause a car crash. When roads are wet, accidents happen more often, especially when cars are going fast or making sharp turns. A truck’s load or a branch that has fallen from a tree could block the road.
