Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

The term “multi-vehicle collision” refers to a collision involving three or more vehicles. “Chain-reaction” crashes, in which one vehicle bumps into another, causing it to hit other cars on the road potentially, are a common cause of these accidents.

Car accidents can be life-changing and traumatizing, especially when they involve another vehicle. Because cars are so common, many people don’t realize how dangerous they can be or how easily they can cause serious and even fatal car accidents.

Millions of people are injured, and thousands of drivers and passengers are killed every year across the country. A total of 36,560 people were killed in car accidents in 2018, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation.

In 2017, Riverside alone reported 2,119 injuries and deaths from motor vehicle accidents on surface streets such as Jurupa Ave., Wells Ave., Pierce St and more commonly on surrounding highways like the 91, 215, and the 60.

These tragedies are only made worse because most of them were avoidable; almost 80 percent of all traffic collisions result from distracted driving behavior.
