[12-22-2022] Los Angeles County, CA – Former Mayor Killed, Pilot Injured After Plane Crash on Santa Monica Beach

Former mayor Rex Minter was killed, and a pilot injured when a plane crashed in Los Angeles Thursday afternoon, December 22, 2022.

Authorities reported that the deadly collision transpired around 3: 15 p.m. at the Santa Monica Beach 1800 block.

A witness recorded video of the single-engine Cessna 150 descending from the skies, hitting the sand, and flipping over not far from beachgoers.

Both victims were on board when the pilot reported engine problems after taking off from Santa Monica Airport.

According to the reports, one of the two was in cardiac arrest when they were extricated from the crashed plane.

The pilot was transported to a nearby hospital, where their status is unknown.

Officials also stated that no bystanders were hurt on the beach.

Firefighters and lifeguards assisted at the scene. To keep the plane from washing away, firefighters had to tow it out of the water partially.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are looking into what caused the crash.
