Bicycle Accident Statistics

People that travel using bicycles make up only 1% of all trips in the United States. But bicyclists are still at a larger risk of injury and death in a crash than motor vehicle occupants.

Bicycling is becoming more popular in the United States, whether for commuting, fitness, or simply for recreation. Bicycles on the road are considered vehicles by law, with the same rights and obligations as motorized vehicles. Unfortunately, motorists frequently ignore bicyclists’ rights.

In 2019, 843 bicyclists were killed in collisions involving motor vehicles. This indicates a 3% drop from the 868 biker fatalities in 2018. Although bike deaths have declined by 16% since 1975, they have surged by 36% from their low point in 2010.

In many of these cases, the driver failed to yield the right of way, didn’t check for bikes before pulling out, ran a stop sign or red light, or wasn’t paying attention while driving. Texting and driving, drunk driving, and careless driving can all lead to a bicycle collision.
