According to the California Highway Patrol’s initial reports, the accident happened at Shepherd Avenue, just east of Peach Avenue, at approximately 4:15 a.m.
Two pedestrians, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old were walking on Shepherd Avenue when they were suddenly struck by a passing pickup truck.
How the collision occurred, and the reason why it happened is currently unclear. The two pedestrians were rushed to Valley Children’s Hospital to receive treatment.
The driver that struck the pedestrians remained at the scene and cooperated with the police. Drugs and alcohol were not considered as factors in the crash.
Pedestrian Accident Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are currently investigating the case. They will attempt to determine the factors that affected the crash.
Pedestrians are more vulnerable to the dangers on the road compared to passengers in private vehicles. Passengers of private cars are protected by seatbelts and airbags, decreasing the fatality rate of an accident, while pedestrians are not protected from the dangers on the road.
Pedestrians currently make up a large percentage of traffic fatalities in the past 33 years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased by 27 percent from 2007-2016 while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14 percent.
When facing cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced Fresno County wrongful death attorney specializing in fatal pedestrian accidents to conduct an independent investigation. Attorneys have the resources that can help them prove the negligence of the liable party.
