Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Statistics

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of bodily injury in the United States. Every year, about two million individuals are wounded in car accidents. There are about 200,000 of them in California alone. Riverside County is the fourth most populous region in the state, with over 2,000,000 individuals, and is regarded as one of the most dangerous to drive in.

In 2017, Riverside alone recorded 2,119 injuries and deaths from motor vehicle accidents on surface streets, including Jurupa Avenue, Wells Avenue, Pierce Street, and, more commonly, neighboring freeways like the 91, 215, and 60.

A sideswipe collision occurs when two vehicles traveling in the same direction collide. This type of accident frequently occurs where two lanes join, such as on an interstate highway onramp.

Sideswipe incidents, also called “angled collisions” by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, are a rarely discussed type of car accident since they rarely result in the spectacular rescue scenes seen on the news. They do not elicit the anger that a drunk driving case does.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, almost 250,000 sideswipes occur in the United States each year, with around 2,500 of these incidents resulting in fatal injuries.
