Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

In California, car accidents are a common concern. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 3,304 fatal car accidents in California in 2017. Driving is risky in any part of California. The vast majority of crashes, however, may be avoided. Human error is at fault for 94% of all accidents.

A multi-vehicle collision occurred in this case. When three or more vehicles collide, the accident is referred to as a “multi-vehicle” collision. A “chain reaction usually produces this type of collision,” in which one car collides with another, perhaps causing the other vehicle to collide with another.

According to a recent NHTSA study, over 13,000 people die each year in multi-vehicle accidents involving passenger vehicles, accounting for more than 40% of all motor vehicle fatalities.

These accidents are frequently caused by reckless driving, speeding, intoxicated drivers, and inattentive drivers.
