Fatal Big Rig Crash Statistics

Big rigs go by many names; they are often referred to as semi-trucks, 18-wheelers, tractor-trailers, and semi-trailer trucks. Regardless of what these commercial trucks are called, this type of accident can have deadly consequences.

Compared to a standard sedan, a large rig might weigh up to 80,000 pounds. This considerable size disparity has the potential to result in an accident.

According to the United States Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), fatalities involving large rig vehicles have increased by 30% since 2009. In 2017, 4,102 people were killed in large rig incidents.

In 2019, there were 12,761 large rig incidents in California, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Various circumstances can cause trucking accidents involving large commercial vehicles. Examples include driver inattention and weariness and technical breakdowns such as tire blowouts or vehicle problems that render the vehicle inoperable or non-operational.
