Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big-rig is a common term used to describe today’s massive tractor-trailers and semis. When talking about commercial trucks, both terms can be used interchangeably.

Tractor-trailer accidents have a significantly higher fatality rate than other forms of vehicular collisions. Very large vehicles like semitrailers and buses contribute significantly to this problem. More stopping distance is required for semitrailers with heavy loads.

Death by a truck-related accident occurs once every 15 minutes in the United States. Each year, transportation-related accidents claim the lives of nearly half a million people, including over 5,000 truck drivers in the United States.

There are an average of 113 fatalities and nearly 3,000 injuries per year in California due to truck accidents. Between two hundred and three hundred people are killed in truck-related accidents each year in the Golden State of California.

The highest-ever recorded number of deaths from accidents involving semi-trucks occurred between 2009 and 2015. Passenger vehicle occupants accounted for one out of every ten traffic fatalities in the United States in 2015.

When following a large truck traveling at less than 40 miles per hour, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration advises leaving at least 4 seconds of space between your vehicle and the truck’s rear bumper. When traveling at speeds greater than forty miles per hour, another second must be added.
