A 26-year-old man identified as Stanley G. was killed after a two-vehicle collision involving a big rig in Lancaster on Thursday night, January 14.
The accident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. on State Route 138 near State Route 14 in Lancaster.
Grovers was initially driving his 2002 Toyota Solara eastbound when, for unexplained reasons, he crashed into a 2016 Freightliner semi-truck that was turning left from state Route 14 to state Route 138.
Grovers sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The big rig driver remained at the scene and cooperated with local authorities. He was reportedly unhurt from the crash.
Fatal Big Rig Collision Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are currently attempting to determine the factors that caused the deadly accident to occur through the official investigation.
Big rig collisions are often deadlier than other roadway accidents. It’s mainly because of the considerable size difference big rigs have compared to regular vehicles. A fully loaded big rig needs as much as 20 to 40 percent more stopping distance. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), big rig trucks have increased by 30 percent since 2009. There were 4,102 traffic fatalities involving a big rig in 2017 alone.
Common reasons why big rig accidents occur are loss of control of the truck, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue. When encountering cases like this, it’s vital to have an attorney conduct an independent investigation for the victims. Attorneys will consider all possible contributing factors such as road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting when examining the case.
