Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Many types of traffic accidents can kill a pedestrian, but pedestrian accidents are particularly deadly. This is mainly because pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to traffic-related injuries and fatalities. After all, they have no safety measures in place in the event of an accident.

In the United States, 5,977 pedestrians were killed on the road last year. This means that one death occurs every 88 minutes or so. In 2017, an estimated 137,000 pedestrians suffered nonfatal injuries in collisions and were taken to the hospital’s emergency room.

California has the nation’s deadliest highways for pedestrians, according to the Federal Highway Administration. California has a 25 percent higher fatality rate than the national average, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2018, there were 893 pedestrian deaths and 14,000 injuries in California alone. Negligent driving, speeding, and drivers failing to yield to pedestrians are all common causes of pedestrian accidents.
