Pedestrian Accident Statistics
In 2023, an estimated 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States, making up about 18 percent of all traffic-related deaths. Since reaching their lowest point in 2009, pedestrian fatalities have risen by nearly 78 percent.
Hit-and-run crashes remain a major issue. In 2023, one in every four pedestrian deaths involved a hit-and-run. From 2014 to 2019, these incidents accounted for around 20 percent of pedestrian fatalities. That number increased to 24 percent in 2020 and has remained near 25 percent in recent years.
Over the long term, pedestrian safety has improved for most age groups. Children under 13 experienced the largest decline in fatality rates, with a 93 percent decrease between 1975 and 2023. Teenagers aged 13 to 19 saw a 71 percent drop, while adults aged 70 and older had a 73 percent decline. The only group with an increase was adults between 20 and 44, whose fatality rate rose by about 6 percent.
Since 2009, pedestrian death rates for adults over 20 have continued to increase, while rates for children and teenagers have steadily declined. These figures show that age continues to play an important role in pedestrian safety outcomes.
