Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Every year, thousands of pedestrians are killed on roads across the United States, and many more experience serious injuries that do not result in death. Several factors can increase the chances of a pedestrian crash, including vehicle speed, the type of road, the type of vehicle involved, and alcohol use by either the driver or the pedestrian.

In 2022, more than 8,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes nationwide. This averages to about one death every hour. That same year, an estimated 140,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for non-fatal injuries. Pedestrian fatalities made up about 20 percent of all traffic-related deaths, showing that pedestrians remain one of the most vulnerable groups on the road.
