A 25-year-old man identified as Hugo Gonzalez M. was killed after a fatal motorcycle accident involving a big rig in Long Beach on Friday morning, June 4th.
The fatal collision transpired at approximately 9:10 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of 91 Freeway at the Cherry Avenue off-ramp in Long Beach.
Martinez, who was riding his 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound, was suddenly ejected from his motorcycle for unclear reasons.
He then rolled into the number three lane where a 2011 Freightliner struck him. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the big rig was not injured.
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the case.
Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
It is undeniable that motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable motorists on the roadway. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics, motorcycle riders have 16 times the risk of injury and 35 times the risk of a fatal crash compared to car passengers.
California has over 800,000 registered motorcycles. This, of course, means that there are also more motorcycle accidents in California than in other states. In 2017 alone, 16,505 motorcycle accidents happened in California, leaving 15,527 injured and 541 people dead.
