A 28-year-old man was killed while another man was injured after a major rear-end crash in Scotts Valley on Friday night, June 4th.
The accident happened along the northbound lanes of Highway 17 near Mount Hermon Road at around 10:00 p.m. A northbound Toyota Tacoma reportedly rear-ended a Toyota Camry as it attempted to overtake it.
The Toyota Camry then lost control and started spinning around before coming to a stop. Meanwhile, the Toyota Tacoma rolled over and ejected the driver.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma was fatally wounded from the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the Camry driver was brought to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.
Drugs and alcohol were not considered as factors in the accident. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The California Highway Patrol is actively investigating the accident.
Fatal Rear-End Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rear-end collisions account for about 29 percent of all traffic accidents resulting in serious injury in the entire country.
Rear-end accidents are some of the most common types of car accidents in the state of California. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), there were 118,029 drivers involved in rear-end injury car accidents and 405 drivers involved in rear-end collisions with fatalities in 2011.
A rear-end accident occurs when one vehicle collides with the car immediately in front of it. Because the leading driver cannot usually prevent the collision, a rear-end accident is often (but not always) the fault of the rear position driver. Some common reasons why rear-end accidents occur are distracted driving, tailgating, reckless driving, and driving under the influence.
Santa Cruz County Wrongful Death Attorney for Victims of Fatal Rear-End Accidents
Typically, in rear-end accidents, the rear drier is at fault. Perhaps they were following too closely, speeding, or distracted. However, there are some circumstances that would make the front driver liable. For example, if that driver was reversing when the accident occurred.
