[01-09-2026] San Joaquin County, CA – Person Killed After Being Struck by Vehicle While Changing Tire on Southbound I-5 Near Stockton

A person was killed after being struck by a vehicle while changing a tire along southbound Interstate 5 near Stockton early Friday morning, January 9, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to the crash at approximately 4:30 a.m. on the southbound I-5, north of Roth Road.

Investigators said the person was outside their vehicle changing a tire when they were hit by another vehicle traveling through the area. The individual changing the tire suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not immediately known. CHP said impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
