Steps To Take After A Truck Accident

Losing a loved one in a crash involving a commercial truck is an overwhelming experience. During the days that follow, it can be difficult to know what actions to take. The steps below may help guide families through the immediate aftermath.

  1. Request The Collision Report From CHP
The California Highway Patrol prepares a detailed report after serious collisions. This report may include roadway conditions, vehicle positions, preliminary findings, and scene photos. You can contact the local CHP office to ask how and when to obtain a copy.
  2. Contact The County Coroner Or Medical Examiner
The coronerโ€™s office can provide a death certificate and, in some cases, an official report that includes findings about the cause of death and any medical details related to the incident.
  3. Preserve All Documents And Communications
Start gathering and saving anything related to the crash. This may include vehicle insurance information, funeral service costs, medical records (if any treatment occurred before passing), and any communication with investigators or emergency responders.
  4. Note Any Expenses And Financial Impact
Keep track of all costs your family has faced as a result of the loss, such as funeral expenses, transportation, burial services, and time missed from work. These records may help you understand the financial effects of the crash.
  5. Be Cautious With Insurance Companies
Insurance representatives may contact the family shortly after the crash. You are not required to give detailed statements right away. Itโ€™s okay to ask for time to review the situation before responding or signing anything.
  6. Speak With A Truck Accident Lawyer
If you have questions about how these cases are handled or want to understand your legal rights better, a lawyer can provide information related to fatal collisions involving commercial trucks.

Truck Accident Statistics

Large trucks play an important role in transportation, carrying goods across the country every day. However, because of their size and weight, they can also be involved in serious traffic crashes.

In 2023, 5,375 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes in the United States. While this number was 8.4% lower than in 2022, it was still 43% higher than it was ten years ago. This means that even though there was a small improvement in the past year, the long-term trend shows an increase in fatal truck crashes.
