[08-24-2025] Sacramento County, CA โ€“ Passenger Suffers Major Injuries After Loose Tire Crash on Highway 99 Near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard

A passenger suffered major injuries after a loose tire caused a crash on Highway 99 in Sacramento on Sunday afternoon, August 24, 2025.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at around 2:00 p.m. on Highway 99 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Authorities said a tire came off a vehicle traveling southbound, crossed into the northbound lanes, and struck the front of another vehicle. The front passenger in the impacted vehicle sustained major injuries and was transported to a hospital.

The CHP South Sacramento office is handling the investigation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic fatalities declined for the fifth straight quarter during the first half of 2023. An estimated 19,515 people died in motor vehicle crashes during that time, reflecting a 3.3 percent drop from the 20,190 deaths reported in the same period in 2022. The downward trend was seen in both the first and second quarters of the year.

Preliminary figures also show that vehicle miles traveled increased by 2.3 percent. Drivers traveled 35.1 billion more miles compared to the previous year. Even with more time spent on the road, fatal crash numbers went down. As a result, the estimated fatality rate decreased from 1.31 to 1.24 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
