Motorcycle accidents remain a major safety concern in the United States, as motorcyclists face a significantly higher risk of serious injury or death compared to other road users. Although motorcycles account for a small percentage of vehicles on the road, they are responsible for a disproportionate number of traffic fatalities and injuries.

In 2021, motorcyclists accounted for 13.8% of all traffic fatalities, despite motorcycles representing only 3.5% of registered vehicles and comprising 0.6% of total Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). That year, 5,932 motorcyclists were killed nationwide, including 565 in California.

From 2020 to 2021, motorcycle fatalities rose by 7.7% nationwide, with California seeing a smaller increase of 2.9%. These figures underscore the ongoing risks motorcyclists face, despite efforts to enhance safety and reduce crashes.
