In 2023, roughly 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States, accounting for about 18% of all traffic-related deaths. Since reaching a low point in 2009, pedestrian fatalities have increased by approximately 78%.
Hit-and-run crashes remain a major concern. In 2023, one in four pedestrian deaths involved a hit-and-run. For comparison, these incidents accounted for approximately 20% of pedestrian fatalities between 2014 and 2019, rose to 24% in 2020, and reached 25% in recent years.
Long-term trends show that pedestrian death rates have declined for most age groups. From 1975 to 2023, children under 13 saw the largest improvement, with a 93% reduction in fatalities. Teenagers aged 13 to 19 experienced a 71% drop, and adults aged 70 and older saw a 73% decrease. Adults aged 20 to 44 were the only group with an increase, rising 6%.
Since 2009, death rates for adults over 20 have generally continued to rise, while rates for children and teens have steadily declined. These patterns highlight ongoing challenges in pedestrian safety, particularly for middle-aged adults.
