Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian safety remains a major concern across the United States, particularly in areas with heavy traffic and high pedestrian activity. In 2023, an estimated 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes, accounting for about 18% of all traffic-related fatalities. These numbers reflect the increased vulnerability of pedestrians compared to individuals traveling in motor vehicles.

Long-term data also shows a troubling trend. Since reaching a low in 2009, pedestrian fatalities have increased by approximately 78%, pointing to ongoing challenges involving roadway design, driver behavior, and safety infrastructure.

These statistics highlight the continued need for improved pedestrian safety measures and greater awareness of the responsibilities of both drivers and pedestrians. Ongoing efforts to reduce risks and prevent injuries are essential to protect people walking along U.S. roadways.
